District 9-2A Season Preview
by Colby Shawn, Fever Host
The UIL had a surprise up their sleeve this year when they put 8 teams in District 9. That means teams will have to learn on the fly, as they will get only 2 pre-district games before the games start counting towards their playoff dreams. Teams like Chico, Olney, City View and Jacksboro could have used the extra time to prepare for district but they will not get it as week 3 this season starts District play.
The Alvord Bulldogs make the move from Class 1A to 2A this season. While I don’t think you will notice much of a slide for the Bulldogs, I don’t think they will be quite good enough to win the District Crown. Coach Chaney brings back 14 starters this season. You can never count the Bulldogs out of winning a dogfight, and I still think they are a solid 2nd place finish in the district this year.
The Henrietta Bearcats are coming off a playoff performance last season and will look to win the district this season behind the legs of Keith Wolf. “The Wolf” led the bearcats last season with 15TDs and 1,315 yards rushing. The Bearcats return 13 starters on defense and offense. I think last years playoff experience will prove to be too much for everyone else in the district, The Bearcats are my pick to bring home a district championship!
While I think I know who has 1st wrapped up the race for 2nd will be much closer. The game between Holliday and Alvord will be a good one this season. The Holiday Eagles missed out on the playoffs in 2005 and trust me they have one thing on their mind in 2006. With QB Trevor Wooten back at the reins and RB Cuyler Flinn pulling the sled the Eagles will make it back to the dance floor in 2006.
Both the Nocona Indians and the Jacksboro Tigers have new head coaches this season. While both programs have had much success in years past this will prove to be a building year for both squads under Head Coach Potter (Jacksboro) and Head Coach McElroy (Nocona).
Speaking of success, a team that has not had much of it in the last couple years is the Chico Dragons. While success doesn’t necessarily translate into wins, the Dragons did manage to get one win in district play last season. I think 8 teams in a new district will equal 2 district wins this season. If returning only 4 starters on offense wasn’t bad enough for Head Coach Pete Hart, he will have to replace his starting QB who moved to Alvord just days before 2-a-day practices began.
The Olney Cubs and the City View Mustangs will battle it out this season for last in the district. Unfortunately for the Mustangs it looks like another 0-10 season.
Scooter’s Prediction Holliday, Henrietta, Alvord, Jacksboro, Chico, Nocona, Olney, City View
Bear's Prediction - Henrietta, Alvord, Holliday, Nocona, Jacksboro, Chico, Olney, City View
