Daugherty Makes Decison
by: Colby Shawn

The Fever has learned that former Bridgeport High School Football
standout Phillip Daugherty has made a decision to attend Sam
Houston State in Huntsville. A source close to the situation
informed the Fever that the Sam Houston State Bearkats had received
approval from Texas Tech Head Coach Mike Leach to talk to Phillip
about transferring to Huntsville. It had been reported earlier
in the week by the Ft. Worth Star Telegram that Leach would
not allow Daugherty to transfer to any school in the State of
Texas, in the Big 12 or on future Red Raider schedules. The
Bearkats also play Texas Tech in the 3rd week of this years
schedule. Coach Leach has already approved this transfer and
Daugherty is packing up in Lubbock now for the move.
The Bearkats are ranked #16th in the nation
in D-IAA NCAA Football. In 2004 the Bearkats had 11 victories
which was the most in the 89 history of the club and finished
the season ranked #4 in the nation. Daugherty will get to see
the field immediatley at Sam Houston, since he is going from
Div 1 to D-IAA, he will not have to set out for a season. For
many Wise County residents its almost amusing that we could
get use to hearing Daugherty to Christian. Sam Houston State
is also the school that Decatur all state wide receiver Brian
Christian chose to attend. Christian made quite a name for himself
in the Bearkats first scrimmage and appears to be well on the
way to earning playing time as a freshman. I hope to hear that
play called many times over the next 3 seasons!!
Daugherty holds several Texas high school passing records:
#4 Single Season
Passing Record 4,678 yards
#3 Career Passing Yards 10,136 yards
#4 Single Season Completions 304 Completions
# 3 Career Completions 680 Completions
Be sure to listen to 98.3fm tomorrow night 8/19/05 starting
at 10:30pm for our high school preview show, where we are expecting
to speak to Phillip Daugherty live about his decision.
