Panthers ROUTE Chaparrals at Homecoming
by Paul Barnett, Friday Night Fever Reporter (Texas2AFootball.com)
Paradise 45
Aubrey 0
This past week the Panthers played host to the Aubrey Chaparrals and their running back Austin Griffin who had a 220 yards per game rushing average. Instead it would be Hunter Watson and the Panthers defense who would have the big night.
After trading possessions and turnovers in the opening minutes of the game, Paradise's groyund game found the endzone on a 3 play, 59 yard drive after a 45 yard run by Hunter Watson. It only took 5 and a half minutes for Watson to score his second touchdown, this time from a yard out to put the Panthers on top at 14-0.
In the second quarter, Zach Bruton broke a 79 yard run which put Paradise down inside the 5 yard line of Aubrey. Paradise was not able to break into the endzone, but they did get points off of the drive with a 22 yard field goal by Josh Erwin.
After an interception by Nick Pike, the Panthers once again had the ball deep in Chaps territory. Pike got the payoff with a 7 yard pass from Josh Erwin for a touchdown.
With 3:22 left in the half Paradise took over on downs from their own 32 yard line. 8 plays and 2:21 seconds later Hunter Watson scored his third touchdown of the night (I wish he was on my fantasy team this week) to put the Panthers up 31-0 with 59 seconds remaining in the game. On the ensuing play for Aubrey, Kyle Smith fumbled and the Panthers recovered and had a chance to put even more points on the board.
After a 34 yard run by Josh Erwin which put the ball on the Chaps 5 yard line, the Panthers fumbled into the endzone and lost the oppotunity to put even more points on the board before the half. But the Panthers did have a 31-0 lead at the half and were in cruize control the rest of the way.
Paradise had a pair of one play drives in the 3rd quarter that went for touchdowns. A 48 yard pass from Erwin to Bryant and a 32 yard run by Bruton all by the 7:41 mark of the quarter.
The Chaparrals got inside Paradise's 10 yard line twice in the 4th quarter but was turned away both times on downs.
Josh Erwin went 8 of 15 for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns and 1 interception, he also had 5 carries for 66 yards. Hunter Watson finished the night with 5 carries for 47 yards and 3 touchdowns and 56 yards receiving. Zach Bruton actually ended up being the leading rusher for the Panthers with 108 yards on 4 carries and one touchdown. The Panthers rushed 27 times for 262 yards as a team and had 428 yards of total offense.
Austin Griffin was held to under 100 yards for the first time this season for Aubrey. The Chaps rushed 49 times for 142 yards and were held to 33 yards passing. Much of that was in the 4th quarter. The Panthers forced 4 turnovers.
