Ladies and Gentlemen, the week is finally here, all of the prelims are over. It is time to put up or shut up for two of Wise County's teams in the Battle of 114.
Both teams come into their 8th game of the year at 6-1 and both are very highly thought of in the 2A ranks. Both teams are averaging over 420 yards of offense per game and are averaging over 30 points a game.
The Boyd YellowJackets are led by the area's leading passer in Cody Ogle who has thrown for 1,811 yards and 18 TDs while completing 65% of his passes. Ogle's arm is complimented by 3 receivers of at least 6 feet tall with speed and very good hands. Jeremy Nelson and Brandon Clement have combined to catch 68 passes for 1,193 yards and 15 touchdowns. Jeremy Nelson is also among the area leaders in scoring with 58 points scored. Ogle is only 2 spots behind Nelson with 54 points scored on the season. Together as a whole, Boyd's offense has averaged 421 yards per game ranking them third in the Star-Telegram 3A and Below in the area.
Defensively, the Yellow Jackets are led by Bradan Ritchey who has 78 tackles in the first 7 games. Jeremy Nelson has tormented quarterbacks all year long as he has 3 interceptions on the season.
The Paradise Panthers are led by the area's 5th leading passer in Josh Erwin who has thrown for 1,395 yards and 14 TDs while completing 60% of his passes. Erwin is complimented by a deep stable of receivers and backs led by wide receiver Braxton Huggins. Huggins has caught 16 passes for 437 yards and 5 TDs, including a pair against Cisco and a 75 yarder against Millsap. The Panthers also boast two of the leading scorers in the area with
Josh Erwin leading the area with 80 points scored and Nick Pike (although he was not listed in the Star-Telegram) with 52. As a whole the Panthers have averaged 424 yards per game ranking them 1st in the Star-Telegram 3A and below in the area. Just in case you wanted to know Cisco is 2nd with 423 yards on average.
Defensively the Panthers have given up just 78 yards per game through the air and 159 on the ground. However, the Panthers have not seen an aerial attack like Boyd has all season.
For the Panthers, the next two games are very important because of their loss to Cisco earlier in district. Both games are must wins for the Panthers.
This should be the greatest Battle of 114 of all time. All eyes in 2A are on this one as two Top 20 teams will battle in Boyd on Friday night. You all know who I am going to pick, so there is no need for me to post my pick.
Good luck to both teams Friday night!!!
