Panthers Claim 114 Bragging Rights for Second Year in a Row
In a game that was supposed to feature an offensive air show with a ton of points on the scoreboard, the Paradise Panther's defense took center stage. The Panthers stopped the potent 'Jacket offense 3 times inside the 10 yard line to preserve a 34-12 win over their inter-county rivals.
The Panthers defense set the tone early as they shut down the Boyd offense on their first possession at the 45 on 4th and inches. The Panthers were able to get one first down before a 15 yard face mask set the Panthers back to their own 46. On 3rd and 24, Cody Hambrick made a one handed catch on a perfectly thrown deep ball from Josh Erwin for the 54 yard touchdown. Paradise would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.
After an interception put the Panthers deep in Boyd territory, series of penalties and a sack put the Panthers in a 4th and 28 situation and the Panthers took a chance on a fake punt pass. The pass was incomplete, but pass interference was called on Boyd and the Panthers were given new life on the possession. Nick Pike later scored on a 4 yard run to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead with 11 and a half minutes remaining in the 2nd quarter.
It took just 2 minutes and 43 seconds for the YellowJackets to respond as Cody Ogle hit Jeremy Nelson from 31 yards out to make the score 14-6.
Boyd's final possession of the first half saw them drive 74 yards to the Paradise 6 yard line line. But the defense of the Panthers held and Paradise got the ball back at their own 6 with 2:15 remaining in the half. With the help of a 35 yard scamper by Josh Erwin the Panthers drove the length of the field in just 5 plays. Erwin hit Justin Bridges on the post pattern from 36 with 3 seconds remaining in the half to take a 21-6 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Paradise Panther's offensive line took complete control of the game. The 18 play, 76 yard drive took 10:43 off of the third quarter clock and was capped off by Erwin's 3rd Touchdown pass of the game this time to Braxton Huggins and the Panthers owned a 27-6 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Once again, the YellowJackets offense got inside the 10 yard line and once again they were stopped on downs. Cody Ogle fumbled into the endzone, but could not recover his own fumble on 4th down and the Panthers took over on their own 1 inch line and drove out to the 18 before having to punt the ball away.
Boyd was able to score on their next offensive play on a 46 yard strike from Ogle to Nelson, but the 'Jackets were not able to recover the onside kick.
Late in the 4th quarter, the Panthers defense put the final nail in the coffin with a 29 yard interception return for a touchdown by Bradley Bryant which gave the Panthers the 34-12 win.
For the Panthers, Josh Erwin was the leading rusher and only passer with 18 rushes for 118 yards and was also 7 of 11 for 112 yards and 3 TDs. Cody Hambrick was the leading receiverwith 3 catches for 69 yards and his first touchdown of the season (congrats Cody, welcome back!!). The Panthers had 347 yards of total offense, including 40 rushes for 235 yards.
The Boyd YellowJackets did have 402 yards of offense 193 threw the air, and 209 on the ground on 32 carries. Jeremy Sessums gained 139 yards on 19 carries. Jeremy Nelson was Boyd's leading receiver with 4 catches for 100 yards and 2 scores. Both teams had 17 first downs. Paradise led in time of possession 28:02 to 19:58.
